Beauty School – Choosing a Cosmetology Program

Cosmetology students choose programs that help them meet state requirements and prepares them for the area of cosmetology they would like to practice.

Purpose

A cosmetology program prepares students pass the cosmetology exam and receive a license to beauty services such as hairstyling, manicuring and facials. During a cosmetology program, a student will learn the theory behind certain practices and then they will have a chance to get hands on practice on mannequins and eventually real models. Once they complete training, they should be fully equipped build a successful business offering cosmetology services.

Requirements

Each state sets its own requirement for cosmetology programs. They require that candidates for a cosmetology license complete a certain amount of hours in a beauty school before they can sit for the licensing exam. The length of program can be from nine to 24 months. Most states require that an individual be at least 16 years old and have a high school diploma or GED equivalency before enrolling in a cosmetology program.

Aspects

In a cosmetology programs, students learn sanitation and safety methods for giving services and using styling tools. Classes give them an understanding of the anatomy and physiology of the human body. Students also acquire and understanding of bone structure and how this influences how they will style a persons hair. All programs teach shampooing, hair coloring and cutting, and chemical treatments. A thorough program includes salon management so that student will have communication, organizational and leadership skills necessary to run their own salon. At the end of a cosmetology program, instructors may administer a practice state board examination to insure that students are prepared for the real exam.

Specialties

Cosmetology classes teach basic facial and nail service. Two specialized programs for cosmetologist are esthetics and nail technology. During an esthetics program, students receive instruction in skin analysis and skin disorders. They also receive hands on training in massage techniques and facials using machinery like vaporizers and galvanic current. Most esthetician cosmetology programs can be completed in about a year. A nail technology program teaches an in depth understanding disorders of the nails, and proper techniques to use when applying artificial nail or massaging the hands and feet. The average program lasts 3 to 6 months.

Considerations

Cosmetology programs can be found at a beauty school or technical college. Consider enrolling in an accredited cosmetology program. A program that is accredited has met nationally recognized standards. Expect to pay between $2,500 to $9,000 for an esthetics program and about $8,000 to $20,000 to learn hair styling. A nail technology course in a cosmetology school can be $1,000 or more.
